Violin in America: Old World Tradition, New World Sound

Beginning February 23, 2008, the Museum of Making Music takes a close look at the immigration and innovation of the violin. The special exhibition “The Violin in America: Old World Tradition, New World Sound” will explore the transplanting of European violin making traditions to American soil by 19th and 20th century immigrants and how communities in the New World added innovation to tradition to ultimately create a unique musical identity. With a large and comprehensive body of work representing the development of the American violin making school from its European beginnings to the most innovative work of today’s best contemporary masters, this exhibition will showcase significant violins from the 1700s to the present day. It will present the stories of independent luthiers who passed down their knowledge and working habits and helped establish various schools of thought across the United States. Del Mar provides a free shuttle to and from the track on colorful double-decker English buses.

Front Porch Gallery is proud to present CAPTIVATING CALIFORNIA, an invitational plein air exhibit by local California landscape painters.  Painting with natural light en plein air (in the open air) is an iconic style long revered for capturing nature's true beauty and essence.  A select group of Southern California artists were invited to present their talented perspectives on the Golden State's treasured landscapes seascapes.  Join us for a captivating show of their visions.

The Carlsbad Recreation Department presents a Friday Night Film Festival at Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park, 6200 Flying LC Lane (near the intersection of Melrose Drive and Carrillo Way) in Carlsbad. Admission is free.

Enjoy nostalgic entertainment under the stars Friday nights in August and September. Bring a low back chair, flashlight and blanket to watch rare historic films from the Golden Age of Hollywood, featuring Leo Carrillo, at the star's legendary ranch retreat. Attendees are welcome to picnic on the hacienda, or purchase refreshments to support the Carrillo Ranch Barn Theater Stabilization/Restoration project.

Movies begin promptly at sunset. Films are selected for family entertainment; however, parental discretion is advised. All movies are subject to change without notice. There will be a showing of the "The Cisco Kid" before each main feature.

2008 Film Schedule:

August 15 - Bowery to Broadway (1944) (run time: 94 minutes). Two Bowery vaudevillians find success in producing shows on Broadway, but a feud erupts when one of them suddenly departs to work for a beautiful woman.

August 22 - Escape from Hong Kong (1942)(run time: 60 minutes). A classic escapade filled with espionage against an Oriental backdrop.

August 29 - Horror Island (1941)(run time: 60 minutes). In the tradition of "Ten Little Indians,"a group of disparate types are lured to a supposedly haunted mansion on a remote island.

September 5 - It Had to Happen (1936)(run time: 79 minutes). Embezzlement, conspiracy and love escalate toward a dramatic courtroom climax.

September 12 - Lillian Russell (1940)( run time: 127 minutes). A biopic of the legendary (and much-married) 19th century musical comedy star.

Support Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park - Dinner and a Movie
On Friday, September 19 a special dinner and film screening will be presented to support the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Trust Fund. Tickets are $22 each and are limited to the first 150 tickets. Order tickets online at www.carlsbadconnect.org or by calling (760) 476-1042.
