The Cannon Art Gallery presents "Sleeping Beauties: The Jerome L. Joss Collecion of African Headrests". Headrests have typically been seen as modest objects with a simple function - to support the head during sleep. On loan from the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History, Sleeping Beauties is drawn from the extrordinary collection Jerome L. Joss (who orginated Sealy Posture-pedic). The headrests are a superb study in the marriage of form and function - most are only four to six inches high. Over a hundred exquisite headrests, primarily from Africa with smaller groupings from Asia and Oceania, are featured in this exhibition. Free admission and parking. The Cannon Art Gallery is located in the library complex at 1775 Dove Lane. 760-602-2021
Materials for building become art and have come out to play in the new sculpture garden exhibition by Carlsbad artist Fritzie Urquhart. Innovative assemblies and playful accoutrements contribute color, sound, sparkle and volume to ten new sculptures that were inspired by play and childhood activities. A xylophone, pinwheels, and a giant pinball machine are just some of the games that become fully realized in Urquhart's exhibition where children and adults alike can engage in the frivolity.
